Room 206 - Welcome to the Orcas Island Room
This island is named after the Spanish explorers of the 18th century, not after the Orca whale! At 58 square miles or 147 square kilometers, it is the largest island in the San Juan Islands chain.
The San Juans are geologically simi-lar to Canada’s Gulf Islands but are located in the Puget Sound on the American side of the border. In addition to being the largest San Juan Island, Orcas also boasts the chain’s highest mountain. Mt.Constitution soars 2,409 feet or about half a mile into the sky. This saddlebag-shaped island is almost cut in half by East Sound. Lush and steep, the island is primarily rural, forested with second growth fir and alder. It is also a land of hills, lakes, waterfalls and miles of trails. The village of Eastsound is located at the northern end of the island and is the second largest town in the San Juan county.
