Van Django Bells
Dec 14th, 7:30 pm
Vancouver's hottest swing string quartet brings their hit Christmas concert to Vancouver Island this December!
Renowned both for the quality of their musicianship and as great entertainers, Van Django's variety show is a merry Christmas mix of nostalgic favourites, jazz standards, sing-alongs, pop tunes, some classical touches, and a few surprises - all delivered in their swinging gypsy jazz style. Folks of all ages can celebrate the season at this fun and festive yule-time show. Joining Van Django's violinist Cameron Wilson, guitarist Budge Schachte, guitarist/cellist Finn Manniche and bassist Brent Gubbels is harmonica virtuoso Keith Bennett, and stellar vocalist LJ Mounteney.
A big success when they first performed the show at Vancouver's Rogue Folk Club for Christmas 2013, the band looks forward to bringing the concert to the Island for this first time this year. Violinist Cameron Wilson says, "everyone had such a great time at last year's first-ever concert of Van Django Bells, it was a natural decision to expand the show this season. Folks loved the mix of music and the feel-good vibes - it's a show that just hits all the right notes at Christmas. We're excited to bring the good times to new audiences, and especially to Vancouver Island this year!" Hear everything from the evocative I'll Be Home for Christmas to Let it Snow, Santa Baby and Silver Bells to Ave Maria, a bit of Beethoven, and so much more - with something every ear, heart, and tapping foot will enjoy. Van Django's music is punchy, driving and rhythmically inventive, combining a wealth of musical influences while maintaining strong roots in the gypsy jazz made famous by Django Reinhardt and the 1930's Quintet of the Hot Club of France. On stage, "they effortlessly whip the audience into a joyful frenzy. Attending a Van Django concert is the most fun you can have sitting down with your clothes on." - Nick Lehr (Djangofest). The perfect answer to winter chill, come share some hot and swinging Christmas cheer with Van Django Bells this year!

A Christmas Carol The Panto
Dec 19th, & 20th, 7:30 pm, to Sun, Dec 21st, 2:00 pm
Peninsula Players and Mary Winspear Centre Present A Christmas Carol Pantomime
What evokes Christmas more than Tiny Tim’s “God bless us every one!” or Scrooge’s “Bah, humbug!"? Why, a traditional rollicking panto, of course! And how better to enjoy the holidays than by putting them together in “A Christmas Carol – The Panto"? Written by Adrian Barradell and directed by Gerald Schieven, this Peninsula Players and Mary Winspear Centre production combines the classic Dickens tale (narrated by Dickens himself!) with the hilarious antics of an old-fashioned panto: villains, heroes, a dame, slapstick, corny jokes, singalongs, and more. There’s even a live band: "What the Dickens".

With a career spanning more than 40 years, Neil Diamond is a living legend in the music industry. Given his amazing collection of Billboard toppers, it takes a truly special talent to deliver a true-to-life tribute experience. NEARLY NEIL will make a believer out of you. Focusing on the early days of Neil’s rise to fame NEARLY NEIL and THE SOLITARY BAND tantalize and mesmerize with all the diamonds of Neil’s heyday; “America”, “I Am … I Said”, “Sweet Caroline”, “You Don’t Bring me Flowers”, “Solitary Man”, “Cherry Cherry”, “Holly Holy”, “September Morn”, “Crunchy Granola Suite”, Forever in Blue Jeans”, “Kentucky Woman”, “Desiree” and “Cracklin’ Rosie”. Bobby Bruce has spent his life onstage from film and television to musical theatre and rock revues. In 1994, Bobby’s incomparable talent for impersonating Neil Diamond came to life. In 1998 he made the switch from impersonation to tribute and NEARLY NEIL and THE SOLITARY BAND was born.
For twenty years, Bobby’s genuine, heartfelt connection to both the music and the audience has created a phenomenon able to recreate the excitement of a living legend at his very best. Possessing captivating stage presence paired with stunning vocal delivery NEARLY NEIL and THE SOLITARY BAND is a memorable tribute in a league of its own. Regarding NEARLY NEIL and THE SOLITARY BAND, Danny Gaisin of the Halton Arts Review stated, “He uncannily duplicates the voice. He captures the very essence of his subject, and most of all, he replicates the contagious and infectious charisma that occurred between Diamond and his audiences”. Hellen Barry of Australian Stage Online continues, “Of course, there’s that voice. That throaty, husky, whispering purr; it’s uncanny.
